Government Announces Public Holiday on 1st Muharram to Mark Islamic New Year

To celebrate the start of the new Islamic year, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) administration has announced a public holiday across the province on the first of Muharram.

The start of Muharram is nearing and the expected 1st Muharram will be on the 8th of July and 9h and 10th of Muharram will be on the 17th and 18th of July.

The Chief Secretary’s formal announcement said that the holiday would be confirmed after the moon was sighted.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, chaired by Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir, plans to meet on July 6 to observe the Muharram moon.

This key gathering will decide the start of the new Islamic year. Concurrently, zonal committees will convene at their separate offices to determine the moon’s visibility. The Chairman of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will then formally declare the start of the new year.

In preparation for Muharram, both the federal and provincial administrations have established extraordinary security measures to maintain peace and order during this important time.
