The federal government has decided to propose laws to regulate social media. In this context, modifications to the PECA Act 2016 are planned to create the Digital Rights Protection Authority.
In the recent period, social media is going out of control from the government hands and many crimes are taking place through the use of social media.
With no clear laws for the misuse of social media, every criminal who has committed crimes with the help of social media gets away easily or with minor punishments.
According to reports, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has authorized the formation of the body by revising the PECA Act.
PM is looking quite serious on this matter and ordering the formation of a committee so that it can be done quickly and easily in a short period.
The modified measure, as well as the creation of the Digital Rights Protection Authority, was suggested by the Cabinet’s Legal Reform Committee. The Ministry of IT, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and other stakeholders were asked to provide recommendations on this bill.
According to reports, the Digital Rights Authority would be created under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

According to the new laws, they will monitor the use of social media and internet services to prohibit internet and social media abuse.
The authority will advise the government on problems concerning digital rights. It will promote safe internet use and enforce restrictions. The authority will encourage collaboration with social media sites to foster a good digital ecology.
After receiving permission from Pakistan’s parliament and president, the authority would be constituted under the Ministry of IT and Telecom. It is worth noting that last week, the Ministry of IT issued an SRO establishing the National Cybercrime Investigation Authority.
